Tonsil Surgery
The tonsil; located next to the root of the tongue in the oral cavity, are important organs that allow the collection of microbes entering the body and the formation of defense substances in the body. Health problems related to the tonsils are most often observed during childhood. In children, there is an increase and swelling of the tonsils, especially due to infection. In such cases, tonsil surgery may need to be performed.
Tonsils should be taken especially in children at the points where inflammation is frequently observed. If the child has tonsillitis more than 3 to 5 times a year, tonsillectomy surgery may need to be performed. In addition, if the patient has a suspected tonsil abscess, malignant tonsil tumor, tonsil surgery may need to be performed. Other cases in which tonsil surgery should be performed are:
- The patient has difficulty breathing and swallowing,
- Tonsillitis that causes breath, bad breath,
- Rheumatism of the heart, inflammation of the heart valve or inflammation of the kidneys,
- Tonsil surgery should be performed in cases of tonsil growths that lead to deterioration in the jaw structure.
If the child has snoring along with nasal breathing difficulties, it may be necessary to remove the nasal flesh along with the tonsils.
Tonsil diseases can occur in all age December. But in general, it occurs during childhood. If a throat infection is frequently observed in adults, surgery may need to be performed. There is no upper age limit. There is no lower age limit for children, but if there is no emergency, the child can be expected to grow up to 3-4 years old.
Tonsil surgery is a very comfortable and high success rate operation. In cases where the tonsils are often inflamed and cause disease, tonsillectomy surgery should be performed. In some cases, it may also be necessary to reduce the tonsils within the scope of tonsil surgery.
As part of this operation, all the tonsils are removed. But since there are organs of the same structure in the area called the waldeyer's ring, which performs the same function in the body and is also located in the throat area, there is no problem caused by the lack of this tissue in the body.
This surgery is a procedure that has been performed for about 120 years and intensive studies have been conducted on it. Intense infections due to this surgery, easy descent of infections into the lungs, a decrease in immunity, and even whether patients get cancer more easily in the future have been studied for years, but no findings in this direction have been found. Today, the tonsils, which are not intensely inflamed but cause breathing difficulties because they are too large, can be treated by shrinking without removing all the tissue. In this surgery, a large part of the tonsil tissue is removed. But not all of it will be taken. The remaining tonsils fulfill for the immune system.
Today, tonsil surgeries can be performed in various ways. Although these methods do not have extreme advantages over each other, some techniques have the advantage of having some reduction in bleeding that will occur during surgery.
Postoperative pain is minimal in all techniques in children and is not very important. There is no big difference between the techniques in parameters such as bleeding pain after surgery and Decontamination between Decontamination techniques. Currently, tonsil surgery can be performed using techniques such as classical cold knife dissection technique, monopolar or bipolar cauterization technique, laser technique, thermal welding technique, plasma coagulation/ablation technique.
The recovery process after tonsil surgery varies depending on the success of the operation, the patient's health problem and age. The patient is sent home 3-4 hours after the operation because he was taken to the surgery under general anesthesia, but there may also be cases where he should stay in the hospital for 1 night according to preference. The patient usually heals quickly.
However, the full recovery process is 2 weeks. regular use of the medications recommended by the doctor within the scope of the 2-week period, compliance with the doctor's nutrition and rest recommendations was also very important
The most important thing to be considered after tonsil surgery is that the patient rests on the day of the operation. After the operation, the patient should stay away from hard foods, carbonated drinks and alcoholic beverages for the first 7 days. It is important for the patient to stay away from heavy physical activities for a long time within this period.
Following the surgery, it is important to fulfill the instructions given to the patient in order to shorten the healing process. The issues that the patient should pay attention to are:
- The patient should take care to consume juicy and soft foods for two weeks in the first week after surgery.
- It is important for the patient to stay away from hot foods for the first week.
- The patient can consume foods such as cold water, milk, ice cream.
- The patient should stay away from alcohol and tobacco products until the recovery period is completed.
- All medications prescribed by the doctor should be used regularly.
- The patient should start doing sports after the healing process is completed.
- The patient should take a shower with warm water during the recovery period.
- Doctor's controls should not be disrupted
